Climate Change

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)—  website (http://www.ipcc.ch) The IPCC is a scientific intergovernmental body set up by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP)   to understand climate change, it’s impacts and what to do about it. The site provides many reports including regular updates on climate change as well as technical papers and special reports.

US Global Change Research Program – website (www.usgcrp.gov) The  (USGCRP) supports research on climate change and provides good educational material for anyone who wants to understand the science behind climate change.

 The Global Change Master Directory – website (http://gcmd.nasa.gov/).  This site helps users find and access data bases with Earth Science data sets and services.  The GCMD database holds more than 20,000 descriptions of Earth science data sets and services covering all aspects of Earth and environmental sciences. One can use the search box or select from the available keywords to search for data and services.  

 

Land Degradation/Biodiversity

 The Overseas Development Institute's Forests Environment and Climate Change    Program website (www.odi.org.uk/climatechange) lists resources including opinion papers, briefing papers, working papers, journals and books regarding tropical forestry policy and ways in which to improve the livelihoods and well-being of the forest-dependent poor, while also securing the long-term future of forest resources.

 

Environmental Sustainability and Sustainable Development

 

United Nations Division for Sustainable Development -website (http://www.un.org/esa/sustdev/) contains vast information on this topic including documents, publications, databases and links.

Global Footprint Network—Much good introductory and advanced information on the

concept of “ecological footprint” at the website of the Global Footprint Network, at

www.footprintnetwork.org.

 The LearningForSustainability website – (http://learningforsustainability.net) contains guides, tools and checklists that can help engage individuals and communities in Environmental Sustainability.

Air Quality

The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has a very comprehensive website  (http://www.epa.gov/ebtpages/air.html) dedicated  to all aspects of air pollution including the air pollutants, control measures, legal aspects and indoor air pollution.

SCI Journals – Collected Resources has an extensive list of open access Air Pollution journal articles listed at the following web address (http://www.scijournals.org/cgi/collection/air_pollution)

 

Water and Soil Quality

The United Nations GEMS/Water Programme – website (http://www.gemswater.org/)  provides scientifically-sound data and information on global inland water quality for the purpose understanding global inland water issues.

The World Health Organization (WHO) – has a website (http://www.who.int/water_sanitation_health/en/) which contains databases, guidelines, training material and tools for maintaining sustainable water.

The United States Department of Agriculture provides a website (http://www.nal.usda.gov/wqic/lists.shtml) which lists a number of forums, discussion groups and mailing groups that one can join regarding water quality issues.

Natural Resources Conservation Services- website (http://soils.usda.gov/sqi/) provides goodl information regarding soil quality, how to do soil assessments, soil quality management guidelines and a list of resources and publications.

 

WASTE MANAGEMENT

The Global Development Research Center – has a website (http://www.gdrc.org/uem/waste/waste.html)  dedicated to waste management. On this site there is much educational information regarding waste management in addition to  documents, tools, programs and initiatives regarding waste impact assessments.

Global Recycling Network -website (http://www.grn.com/) is an electronic information exchange that specializes in the trade of recyclables reclaimed in Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) streams, as well as the marketing of eco-friendly products. Also on this page are many resources and directories regarding recycling.

The United States Environmental Protection Agency has an nsive website regarding waste management issues (http://www.epa.gov/epaoswer/osw/index.htm). On this site there is much information on topics such as different types of waste, recycling, pollution prevention and waste treatment and control.
